" WITHIN THE LAW." A unique weapon of offence, with dangerous possibilities, will again be introduce! to New Plymouth play-goers when "Within the Law" will again be played I here The drama has been unusually ' successful in all the cities of Austra- [ lasia. The weapon referred to is a \ pistol fitted with a Maxim "silence)-," , and was brought to Australia by the i Williamson management especially for the play. It is used with a smokeless cartridge. The weapon, when fired, , makes neither smoke nor sound, it being realised that both Mould be a give- ! away in a case where either was undesirable. For this reason the weapon provides a danger in the hands of criminal's, which is difficult to calculate. Consequently its use has been strictly confined to military authorities, and under the United States prohibition, the manufacture of pistols with "silencers" involves a very heavy penalty. Tho weapon to be used in "Within the Law" was secured by special permission of the New York police authorities, and the Williamson management is under a heavy guarantee to return it when tliey cease to produce the drama. In the third act of "Within the Law" a murder is committed with the silent pistol, a display of its effectiveness having previously been given by one of the actors in the drama, shooting to pieces a vase of flowers without any sound or smoke being emitted. "Within the Law" is a play of the highest dramatic craftsmanship, and not in any way mere sensationalising of impossible events, in New York, where the scenes are laid, it ran for over two years, and it has never failed to win success wherever it has been offered. The cast for this tour wag specially selected by Mr. E. W. Morrison, who originally staged the play in Australia for the Williamson management, and he has rehearsed it and passed tho production as being up to the best metropolitan standard. The scenery has been specially painted by the Williamson chief scenic, artist. Altogether local play-goers may again look forward to a rare treat. The plan is now available at Collier's, where scats may be reserved without extra charge.

The Plimmer-Hall Company, now in the North Island, are meeting everywhere with that success which the worthiness of their project in devoting all profits to the Belgian Fund deserves, but, apart from the avowed object ot their tour, the critics enthuse over the merits of their productions. "The Mutiny and the Humming Bird" is a splendidly east play, the members of the company being thoroughly suited, and in "A Message from Mars" many of tar principals have played their parts before. Wilde's "Lady Windormrv-e's Fan," with its thoroughly typical tumor, lias made a very distinct hit,--]>rov-ing that the brilliant author is one \v'..i did not write for his own time alone. I -
