DISTRICT NEWS.
OPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondents). At the Town Board mooting on Monday evening, Messrs Dudley (chairman), Trotter, Million, and Ross were present. Mr Climic, engineer, in complian-e with a request of the Beard, wrote that he had carefully considered tho matter of estimates on his original water and drainage scheme, and found that the estimate cost of the work should be increased by 5 per cent., due to the rise in the price on pipes that had to be imported. The total cost now will be £11,007 10s. The total valuation of the town is £105,000, and the valuation for .water and drainage race £90,500; total charges for interest at (i per cent would be £754, which would be covered by a 2d rate. At the County Council meeting on Monday, Messrs Fleming (chairman), Dudley, Wright, McNeill, Macßeynolcls, and Young were present. The Council decided to allocate races to the by-roads on mileage basis. Previously it was done by each sub-dividen.t receiving all revenue due to it. Regarding the claim of Tate Bros, for £122 las (id on the Wire:— "Vulio) contract, which is a Oov-ii!' .„ road, £4OO was collected by tho ratepayers in that part of the district, with a Government grant of £4OO. The contract was not to exceed £SOO, as expressly instructed by tho Council. The contract had been finished for some time, and the claim for the sum of £122, and £22 were over and above the £BOO allocated for the work. There was some misunderstanding on the part of th.> contractor or the Council's staff. The Council decided to grant Tate Bros £."O over and above the £BOO. It is likely that this sum will not be accepted by Tate Bros, in full satisfaction. . Mr Tong's tender of £750 was heccpted by the Council, providing the contractor does not make a claim for non-fulfilment of previous contract. This is likely to be accepted as a final settlement. The Opunake Racing Ch.-.b chared £450 from the race meeting held en 17th March. This is the best result yet attained by the club. More progress will be made by the club in providing better accommodation for the inero.iv ing number of patrons. HURFOBD ROAD.
