Death has, removed from our midst another of the sturdy pioneers of ]'aranaki, Mr. Nicholas Guiding, who had reached the exceptional age of 1)7 vein's ; last December. On bis !>7th birthday ' ilin old gentleman wa» wonderfully well, and he retained the full use of his faculties until the near approach of the end. Latterly, however, his health gradually failed, as the result of a bout of influenza, and he sank. Death came some- , what suddenly at about seven o'clock ' last evening. < The late Mr. Golding was a native r.f < the North of Ireland. He came to New '< Zealand in 18(H) with the 05th Regiment, j in which he was a sergeant. He went through the TariinaVi Maori war, and ' was present at Waireka and several other engagements. After the close of the war Mr. (iolding was for many yeirs i principal warder at the New Plymouth s prison. He was a member of several i lodges and societies, including the De t Bnrgh Adams, New Plymouth Friendly ( .Society, Foresters, Orangemen, and Good 1 Templars. Ho was twice married, and Mrs (iolding survives him. Of the family there are living two daughters, Mrs. iV M -?T lth - of New Plymouth, and Mrs. Hickman, wife of Constable T Hickman, and the only son, Mr E K Golding; of New Plymouth.
