—■ -•■ _ BROUGHAM STREET EXPERIMENT. COST OF THE WORK. The New Plymouth Borough Council's experiment in concrete roading in brougham. Street has created soine interest in the town. The cost of laying down this piece, which is one chain and a half in length, is stated by the borough engineer to have been as follows-

The item removing and spreading old metal should be charged against Ariki Street, as the metal was used for repairing that street. This would leave a total cost of £7!) lis Id for one chain and a half in length, including channelling, which would have cost'.£s 10s if laid in the usual way. The borough engineer stated to a Baily News reporter that this was about two-thirds of the cost of laying the street in asphalt, which would have cost about £IOO, and about twice as costly as a soltar macadam road. But, of course, there was no comparison in its wearing qualities, the concrete being everlasting-
