NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE.
ANNUAL CONVENTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The New Zealand Alliance Convention opened to-day, with Mr. Wesley Spragg, of Auckland, the president, in the chair. The report presented stated that the outbreak of war injuriously affected the campaign work, and the vote for prohibition and no-license. Approval was expressed of the refusal of the Government to allow wet canteens at expeditionary forces camps. In connection with tae last poll, it was cheering to note that for the whole of the no-license electorates there was a majority of 4085 votes, in 10 electorates majorities were recorded in favor of no-license, and in 31 electorates there were majorities in favor of national prohibition. The report also states that "mainly the war is responsible for a temporary decline in the prohibition vote at the last poll, but the Congress maintains an optimistic outlook, based on the. return of the increased number of candidates pledged to the reduction of the majority required lor the carrying of the reform."
