MORE HATRED. BRITAIN FINDS A RIVAL. ESSEN A HIVE OF INDUSTRY. Received April 12, 5.35 p.m. . London, April 12. A neutral correspondent says that the Germans are developing a hatred of neutrals whose sympathies earlier they had hoped to win. A common argument in Germany now is "If we cannot be loved we must be feared." They hardly mention Italy, but think that if Italy sides with the Allies England will cease to be the most hated enemy, and there is a secret German hope to show Italy after the war that she chose the path of destruction. Germans openly declare that America betrayed them. They are indignant at America dealing in war munitions, and accuse Norway of being ungrateful of the Kaiser's appreciation of Norway's fiords and scenery. "Essen is a hive of industry, working at full pressure, and guarded by the most powerful anti-aircraft guns. Prices of metals, rubber, and petrol have increased enormously.
"There are quick-firers upon the tower of Cologne Cathedral. The masses have already lost much confidence in the military leaders, and anticipate that a difiicult internal situation will develop, but they will not give in until the Allie-j invade Germany along the whole front. But Germany will rapidly eollaps.e. aft-sr another blow like that on the Marine."
