EACING FIXTURES. 1 April 14, 17—Wellington R. C. Autumn. April 21, 22—Manawatu R.C. Autumn April 30, May I—Hawk/e's Bay J.C. Autumn. I TURF TOPICS. Wellington races on Wednesday. Kgmont entries are due on Thursday. Avon Park paid two good dividends at Feilding. Bclasco Cost his party a pile of money at Ellerslie. Seotcli Artillery, winner of the Sydney Cup, is by Royal Artillery. Some of the jocksters at Feilding should have had their saddles bird-lim-ed! Things are alleged to be bad in Auckland, but the public managed to dig up just on a hundred thousand quidlets to run through the 'Ellerslie tote. The jumping at Feilding was simply awful. On the second' day three out of five fell in the open hurdles, and the ■ hacks simply ran the fences down. Monologue's victory in the Onia Hurdles was nothing to crow over. The Diver and Ivatua levelled the obstacles and the winner was hardly asked to jump at all. When Flingot lost his rider in the Ivimbolton Hurdles, the veteran continued in the race, jumping safely and beating Waterworks home in the orthodox style. He was first into the bird cage, but Jack Delaney mounted and rode him ovcr-4he last two fences again, receiving third money for the feat. After Avon Park's easy victory on the first day, it looked any odds on her starting favorite on Tuesday, seeing that she was only raised 11 lbs. However, the public went strongly for Rowi Poto ahd Playoff, and Mr. Goodwin's mare returned her surprised supporters something in the region of "the limit." Some heavily backed favorites were "outed" at Feilding on the second day. Over a thousand pounds stood against Rewi Poto, King Chiara, Princess Moutoa, and the bracketed pair, Bonnv ITel- j en but thev never had a chance at any stage of their respective ' heats. I Multifual (Multifid —Flasr) ran a c'ocent third to George and Princess Mow- j toa in the Halcombe Welter, and on that j showing looked good thing for the Hade j Welter on the second day. AY. Price got him out first, and he had the rails all j the way. Master Moutoa (C. Price) j challenged at the distance, and a great I finish resulted. Nobody could sav what | won until the numbers were hoisted. Even then the judge placed Bivouac second. and, considering that Bivouac was scratched, the crowd said nothing! The mistake was quickly rectified, however, and Multifual's backers had to be content with a meagre dividend. ! Rewi Poto was punted on as if the Renbich Stakes was as good as over. But 9.!) had him anchored a big way from home, and Avon Park squeezed home from Golden Sky in 1.15 3-5. Playoff looked to have a chance at the turn, : but did not finish straight. Ineuru ■ struck trouble on the journey. I Golden Sky's performance was very > good, considering that the previous even- j ing she won tliff last heat at distant j Waipukurau, and bad bad a tough train run in the interim. Talking of Golden Sky's win on the previous day, a jockster calmly stated that, the darkress was so extreme when the last race was rjin at Waipukurau that the judge had to strike matches to view the fin- j isli! With ordinary luck Flingot Would ! have won the open hurdles on the second day at Feilding. Bravest came : down at the second fence, and Aruake; fell over him, Flingot being badly in- j terfered with. This left Vi with a com- j manding lend from Waterworks and Flingot. Along the back the latter set j sail after the leader and was within a I couple of lengths of Vi three furlongs ; from home. The next fence, which was lving almost flat, saw Flingot slip, and J. O'Connell (who Sloans his mounts) parted eompany with the old nag. Vi then had nothing to beat, and won by from here to the Imperial. | George was the only absentee from j the Easter Handicap field, and the brack-1 eted pair, Bonny Helen and Sunbird, < were entrusted with £ll3B. Another. of Fred Tilley's string, Leonta, was next j best backed, and Sir Alba, who had won I at Waipukurau the previous day, wasl well supported. Combustion and Square Deal were prominent in the early stages, ] but three furlongs from home Square | Deal gained the lead from Sir Alba, Le-' onta and a bunched crowd. Square Dealj was first into the straight, and Sir Alba , drew level, Leonta coming fast on the ! outside. It was a magnificent finish, i Sir Alba beating Leonta by a nose, with ; Square Deal a head away third. Ima-! rose was badly blocked in the straight or might have beaten them all. Mani- j aroa and Bir)dine were next. I King Chiara was another screaming 1 hot favorite in the Rewa Hack Handicap. Mr. Jas. Barlow's Glacier, with .Goldfinch aboard, slipped out first Slid quickly gained a big break. King Chiara put in good work from the bend of the straight, but could not catch the lightweight, who won in 1.15 4-5. Considering that King Chiara had 10.3 and was conceding the winner 3st., he was not by any means disgraced.
Of course aK stay-at-home backers arc I loudlv proclaimiin; th they backed Oawford in Hl3 Mak!no Welter. But those on the course saw the Pt. Paul gelding run last on the opening day stood right off on Tuesday. Erai the nag's party did not benefit to any extent. Crawford won from end to end in hollow fashion, anil followers of fonti were thrown into fits, and one sorrowful punter remarked, "Another Brijk from Taranaki!" The slashing performances of heavily weighted horses like Emperador, War-
step, Merry Roc, Chortle,Leonta and Multiply at the Easter meetings once again prove what a difference. there is between ' top-notchers and the common or garden variety of racehorse. Merry Roe's victory in Auckland was a great performance, but Emperador eclipsed that by j making hacks of Croesus, First Glance ■ i and a big field in the Great Easter at Riecarton. Emperador returned his supporters a surprisingly good dividend. On form there was nothing else in it. The Hon. .T. T). Orninnd came out on top of winning owners at Ellerslie with .ClOlO to his credit. Principal others were Mr. I<\ Hall CS!>:>, Messrs. Collis and Casey £BOO, J. McNu-ol £7OO and -T. Williamson .CSnO. Taranaki drew a blank! Ear different was Use fate of Tara-naki-owned horses at Feilding. Avon Park got away with a double, and King Chinra. Glacier. A elo and Crawford also notched viriovirs. wlii 11■ Cnrnju'l, Ho'vi Poto. Smibird. Play Off. Katua. Nita, Diirane and Kataua gained minor places.
