A SHIPPING QUESTION.

UNDESIRABLE INFLUENCE OF NEW YORK "RING.'' By Telegraph.—Press Association, Auckland, Last Night. The increased shipping freights since the outbreak of the war were reviewed by the council of the Chamber of Commerce to-day. The president, Mr. Robert Burns, said there was no doubt there was in New York a shipping ring which controlled outward freights and also .had a large say in the homeward rates. This Ting was an exceedingly powerful one, and it behoved them to carefully consider whether or not thev should 'begin to organise a movement bo that when peace was restored they would not be left, as they) were now, absolutely dependent on these rings. It was unanimously resolved: "That this chamber invites the co-operation of all other Chambers of Commerce in New Zealand and of the Farmers' Union to inaugurate a movement, so that after the present war is over steps may be taken to prevent shippers from 'being entirely at the mercy of the shipping ring as at present."
