A WELL-MERITED REBUFF.
FROM A PREMIER WITH PBIKCiPLES
By Cable—Press Association—Copyright.
Received April 8, 8.10 p.m. Hobart, April 8. A Labor Council deputation asked the Premier to grant preference to unionists on all public works. The secretary of the Laborers' Union said he belii-ved in "spoils to the victor." Unionists hud worked hard to put the Labor Government in power, and should receive their reward.
The Premier replied that he abominated the idea of "spoils to the victors." If that was what the deputation wanted they had better remove him from office at once. Preference was a legislative not an executive act. If the majority of the electors endorsed preference they could obtain it through legislation.
