ORIGINAL VERSE.
'•'A RECRUIT AND A MAN." Slender bars of light were creeping athwart the eastern sky, The stars above were slowly paling, stilted was the night-bird's cry. Fresh from its nest rose a day-bird singing, sweet and clear and strong. But love, sweet love, on the green sward weeping, heard not the songster's song.
Through the long, long hours of the night, sweet love, fought for love, for love; Her woman's soul laid bare to him, and to the worlds above.
Through the long, long hours of the night, sweet love, in his arms had cried, Love, oh, love of my life, stay and I'll be your bride.
He felt the heave of her breast 'gainst his, in vain he soothed her fears. He felt the press of her lips 'gainst his. he tasted the brine of her tears. He heard his country calling; love strove . as only a woman can. He turned to the dawn as the day-bird rose a raw recruit—and a man. -GKORCEODKY. Piiiigareliu, ;April 7.
