PROPOSED FREEZING WORKS.
STKOXOTA* SUPPORTED AT
*rß>ow-
The propose „./ t-reoi; co-operative freezing works in North Taranaki is meeting with good support in all districts where the matter lias been brought before the farmers, and from the number of shares subscribed and the promises received, it is certain that a systematic canvass will result in the necessary capital being easily obtained. A meeting was held at Urenui yesterday to discuss the proposal, when the following members of the committee appointed at Stratford were present:— Messrs J. Quin (chairman), E. Marfoll, A. TT. Halcombc, A. W. Budge, ind R. H. Pigott. Mr.' A. H. Halcombc, in introducing the visiting members, pointed out that the object was to establish co-opera';ive freezing works in North Taranaki. He referred to the success that had other co-operative ventures in Taranaki. and urged farmers to assist the scheme by taking up shares at once, to warrant the provisional committee in proceeding with the scheme. He emphasised the danger of delay, as there was every peohability that if the proposal dropped now Hawera support, which was now favorable, would be given to Marton. and the chances of a co-operative freezing wor,:s for North Taranaki would be gone. Personally, he felt that the concern would be a sucress.
Mr. Quin dwelt on tlio advantages of co-operation. Reforriti.fi; to the need for; the works, he pointed out that at thc.t day's sale, some fat aettle would have realised £3 or £4 more per head if l.'n.-y had been sold at the fair rate now rn'i'i.i for lieef per hundred. He hoped the div would arrive when they could drive their bulls and cows to a depot and sell them by weight, as was now done with pigs, when they could be {Traded by a Government grader, and the fanner could lie paid a fair price for'them. They wore out to eliminate the middleman, a'ld not in the interests of any auctioneer or town, but solely in the interests of the producer. Referring to the financial aspect, he said that the company wonld .not proceed to allotment until 12.000 shares were applied for. It would lie fatal to be under-capitalised. With £30,000 capital paid up they could borrow ;C'2.~>,000 from the bank, and st'U't with the works completely paid for. This, he added, was not a graziers' concern, but was one in which the sm.'.ll farmer was vitally interested alio. From the support already accorded, l.e felt convinced that toe project would go ahead, and he did not believe tlier 1 would be a man between Moturoa ami Opnnake that would not take up shares. "Mr. Boauehamp (Uruti) considered that tin- scheme woud be strongly supported in that district. Mr. S. W. Shaw apologised for the absence of Mr. King, who, as a fanner, gave the scheme his hearty support, and, if necessary, was prepared to increase his holding later. Referring to the interest taken in the proposal, he said t'n.it two graziers from outside, holding laid in Taranaki, had written unsolicited :'.nd offered to take up 50 shares each.
On the motion of Messrs R. 11. "Pigoit and Beauehamp, it was unanimously resolved that the farmers of the district were in sympathy with the proposal. Messrs C. Barnett (Uruti), A. IT. Haleombe (TJremii), McKenzie (Tikorangi and Waihi), and Martin (Pukoaru'ie) were appointed delegates to attend the central meeting. Three hundred and eighty-three shiucs were applied for at the meeting by .'-'- farmers of the district, in lots rangmg from one to fiftv.
