CAPITAL AND LABOR.
A RIFT IN LABOR'S LUTE.
By Cable —Press Afociation—Copyright. Sydney, April 7.
The Labor Conference discussed two censure motions referring to the Norton Griffiths scheme, one proposing that no member of the Labor Party supporting the scheme be eligible, at next election, the other that the scheme is in conliaveution of a plank of the Labor platform, is unsound, and should not be adopted. Various speakers passed strictures eta the Government. Mr. Holman, replying, explained that the Norton Griffiths scheme was the only alternative to j the cessation of public works. The scheme was a departure from the Labor platform, but it was equally the tlwr.y ] of the Government to keep the people! in employment. i Mr. Hughes said he did not understand the scheme, and thought it a step backwards. Did the Labor Party come into existence to call on capital in the hour nf need and give up its platform as ?>n ideal for four millions? All had striven for years against hiring capitalists to take the place, of the State in the employment of labor. The precedent was one the Commonwealth would not emulate. He was sure, however, that Mr. Holman had striven to promote the best interests of the workers. Both motions were lost.
