ENEMY'S STRONG POSITION
WELLS POISONED IN THE DESERT.
Received 5, 7 p.m. Capetown, April 5.
The enemy's defences at Aus were elaborate. The trenches were deep and well designed, and there was a fine telephonic system involving thirty miles of <wire. There, were, gun emplacements and sunken mines and entanglements. The "Union troops had a stiff task in covering fifteen miles of sandy desert from Garub to Aus. The wells were poisoned with carbolic solution. The enemy •posted a notice on the well, indicating that the wafer was undrinkable. The ■enemy depleted stores and burned much material. The troops bad a miraculous escape. Gun wheels passed within a few inches of mines. The bodies of Several Hottentots wctc found hanged.
