SPORTING.

TURF TOPICS.

(By Moturoa.)

There will be racing at Ellerslic, Feilding, Kiccarton and minor places to-day. Taranaki is most strongly represented at Feilding, and a good deal of local money will hang in the balance pending results from that town. A fair amount of rain has fallen at Feilding during the past few days, and the course is much improved thereby. Fields will be good, and racing interesting. The Feilding Cup has attracted nine horses, including Rewi iPoto, Leonta, Bi'rklinc, Master Lupin, Sir Alba and Sunbird. There is not a really bad horse in the lot, and the issue looks rery open. Kewi Poto and Leonta are the penciller's favorites, and the figures quoted seem to confirm the impression that Rewi Poto will be started in tho Cup in preference to the Mangaone Stakes. The Leonta party arc very confident, and tho Tilley " double "—Postillion and Leonta is quoted at an almost prohibitive price. Leonta is doing well on the tracks, but the black horse should finish in front at a difference of 31b. Birkline has few friends, but Master Lupin, Square Deal and Sir Alba have all been heavily supported. The writer would not be surprise* to see Sir Alba beat the light-weight division. . Rewi Poto and Sir Alba look as fit as anything engaged. If Postillion is caught in a galloping mood he will run well in the Mangaona Stakes with 8.13. Play Off and Incur* —the latter having a 101b penalty—look rather close to the Fordell crack, anft most danger may threaten from Avon iPark and King Cliiara. The latter puts up 101b extra for winning at Bulls. Postillion may start favorite, and there will be plenty of money for King Chiara.

The jumping events will take some picking, but punters may go for Styrax, Flingot and Sir Donald in the Kawa Kawa Hurdles, and Grey Ttenown, Consul and Xita i:i the Hunters' Steeplechase. The minor fiat events will probably draw good fields. Crawford is in the boom for the Halcombe Welter, but may find George and Katana (if reserved) hard nuts to crack. Master Moutoa and Fisher appear to be nicely treated in the Hack Welter, and King Chfara, Glacier, Client and Sylvia March in the other hack races. The Canterbury Jorkey Club's autumn meeting takes place to-day and to-morrow. Considerable interest is being taken in the Great Easter Handiacp (seven furlongs), in which fine horses like Autumnus, Chortle, Empcrador, Croseus and others will measure strides. Chortle's name appears to be in everybody's mouth, but followers of form will mostly go for Emperador. The Great Autumn Handicap (one mile and a half), run on Tuesday, will see IWarstep. Ladoga, Kilrain, Multiply, Banksia and others in action. The fact that Deeley will be on Ladoga has caused a run on that horse, but Warstep is such a great mare that she may take a lot of settling—even with 9.11 on board. Clifford's elect, the records show, are practically invincible in the C..T.C. Challenge Stakes. With three out of the six engaged this year the rule may hold good. .

Naupata may be first favorite in the Hurdles at Riccarton, and on form is certainly the most seasoned horse engaged.

Tho Feilding and Canterbury meetings will 'lie concluded to-morrow."

FIRST DAY'S RACING.

By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received April 3, 7.5 p.m.

Randwick, April 3. The weather was fine and the going good. The attendance was large. Merrimax disappointed his supporters in the hurdles and finished sixth. The public selected Ulva's Isle to win the Autumn Stakes, but Sir Alwynton beat the favorite in the last few yards. The Doncaster produced a big field. Woorak and Portrush shared the popular fancy and flattered their supporters in the early stages, but were unable to last. Garliii, who was always in a useful position, took charge at the distance and won a good race. Mountain Knight captured the St. Leger and had more to spare than the result indicated.

The Sun says the annexation of the St. Leger is interesting as a vindication of the claim that Mountain Knight is the best three-year-old Tunning. MacLachlan rode him with fine judgment. It is estimated that fifty thousand attended the races, and sixty thousand the show.
