A LIFT FATALITY.

WAS TIIH APPARATUS EIGHT? By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Thursday. The Coroner was engaged to-day'en-quiring into tlie circumstances of the death of Miss Dewcs, who was killed on March 20 when stepping out of a lift in Hobson Buildings. Just as she put one foot out, the cage suddenly dropped, and she was caught and crushed between the top of the lift and the bottom of the doorway and died almost immediately. The evidence, of the lift boy -li'.cl others in the cnga was that the indicator was at "oil"' when the cage began to move, and no one could oll'cr any explanation for the starting of the apparatus. Electricians and mechanics examined the installation, but could not explain the accident. The attend'lit, who had worked (he lift at various times, described occasions on which it bad gone out of order. Once before it dropped, and a mini who was struck o„ the head bad a very narrow escape. A business man who had used the lift for years said it was most erratic. The Government inspector said the boy was only sixteen years of age, whereas the law provided that ho must not bo under 18 years. The inquest wa* adjourned. _ ,
