Air. Malcolm Ross has been appointed official correspondent with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. Major McNaught, area group officer, and Captain Chisholm, adjutant 2nd Mounted Rifles, were in New Plymouth yesterday. Sergeant-Major Williamson of Feilding, who has been transferred to New Plymouth, has arrived here to take up his new duties.
Mr M. M. Webster, a worthy citizen of Nelson, was 80 years of age on Tuesday. Hale and hearty, he rode to bnsincss on his bicycle as usual,
Mr. Noel Lewes, of Tnglewood, left yesterday for England, where he hopes to join the forces for the front. He was presented by his friendls with a> smoker's outfit prior to leaving.
Mr Chalmers, of the Bank of New Zealand staff, Elthnm, formerly of Hawera, hns been given a transfer'to Fiji. He was anxious to go to the front, but oouM not get leave.
Mr James Davidson's many friends will regret to learn (says the Ha war* Star), that he has been confined to his room for some days by an attack of illness, but is now on a fair way towards recoverv.
Mr J. H. Howell, of Antonis, baa written to the lnangahua Times that liis patont for submarines has been accepted by the British Ailmiralty. The details of the patent cannot be published at present. Mr Charles G. D. Roberts, who is well known as a writer of tales of wild nature, has gone to the froi't as dm lieutenant in the King's (Liverpool) R«giniont. He was once a private in th« Legion of Frontiersmen. Rev. Mr Blackbourne, who has biMil acting as locum tenens at St Mary's, il».wera, has left, and his place will be taken by Rev Mr Ford Hutchison. The newly-appointed vicar, Rev C. H. GL Cowen, will take charge early in May. Hon. T. Mackenzie's term as High Commissioner expires in August, but the. probabilities are that he will be given an extended term. This would be following the precedents in the eases of Mr W. P. Reeves tnd Sir W. Hall-Jones.
The Right Hon. W. F. Massey, Premier of New Zealand, was 5!) years old en Hominy, having been born in Londondorry, Ireland, on March 20th, 185(1. It >s 40 years since Mr Massey arrived in Auckland. He was flrst returned lo Parliament iu 180!).
Advice liaß been received in Wellington that Private John Malinck, who at the outbreak of the war was a resident of Petono, has been killed in action. He was a reservist, who proceeded Home to prepare to go to the front. Hi widow resides in Petone.. Mr. W. Peck, at one time chief engineer of the Waitara freezing works, died in Sydney a few days ago. After leaving New Zealand, Mr! Peck was in business in Sydney, and about ten years ago was elected secretary of the Sydney district of the Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers.
Mr. Frank Reed, Inspecting Engineer in the Mines Department, saya a Press Association telegram, has been appointed Chief Inspector of Coal Mines under the Amending Act of last year, framed with the object of giving additional powers of inspection to those already in force. Mr. Reed will continue to carry out the duties of Inspecting Engineer of the, Department.
The Public Service Commissioner has notified the appointment of Mr. Richard Brabazon Morris, Chief Postmaster at i Ohristchureh, to the 'position of Chief rlnspector of the Post and 'TelegTaph Department. Mr. Morris is to take up his duties at an early date. The present holder of the position, Mr. David Viller, ia retiring on Press, A.sjipcintipn to'figram.
