Stratford News

(From Our Resident Reporter.) Stratford, Tuesday.

A serious accident happened at the Stratford railway station this afternoon. It appears that Mr. J. Marra, buyer for Messrs Dimock & Co., was loading pigs when a truck that was being shunted struck the one that Mr. Marra was loading, and crushed him against the loading bank. Mr. Marra received severe injuries to his head. He was removid to a private hospital, and at the time of writing was doing as well as could be expected. Influenza is very rife in Stratford at present. Messrs McCluggage & Co. had the bad luck to lose their motor car by fire yesterday. It appears that Mr. Agiicw McCluggage was showing a client over the farm at Pohokura, leaving the car on the roadside, and when they returned the car was in flames, and it was impossible to save it from destruction.

The Midhirst settlers are going to have another try to-day (Wednesday) to hold their twice postponed sports. It is to be hoped they will get a fine day.

The Stratford Golf Club held their annual meeting on Monday. The following officers were elected for the year:—President, A. W. Budge, Esr • - dents, Messrs R. Rpcnce end ". 10. Abraham; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. C. Wright; captain, Mr. F. N. Fusse'd; committee, Messrs R. Spence, Uniackc, Young, and E. C. Robinson; auditor, Mr. P. Skoglund. The opening day is set down for April 15th. Fourteen new members were elected.

By a picnic and concert held by the Tuna settlers, a sum of €23 was raised for the Belgian Relief Fund. Mr. Newton King's Staff are firng a match against the Cardiff Club at the miniature rifle range, to-night (Wednesday).

There will be six teams of visiting scouts camping at Stratford from Friday next. These teams, along with the local scouts, are competing at the Gymkhana. I understand a church parade is to l.c held o n Easter Sunday morning. Next Tuesday the Opnnake bowlers visit Stratford and play :-, match with the local club.
