QUICK PASSAGE.
THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night,
Consignees of cargo from New York by the Star of India, which came via Panama, find that they cannot take delivery of goods for two or three weeks because the necessary documents are not yet to hand. An arrangement exists under which doounvnts are forwarded from New York to London and thence to New Zealand. This system worked well enough when the tramp steamers followed the old routes, but now that they use the Panama Canal theyi reach New Zealand about a fortnight* earlier than the .papers covering their cargoes. As a result merchants, in addition to the delay in obtaining delivery of the goods, have to pay additional storage charges.
