THEFT FROM STEAMER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, March 27. During the stay of the steamer Tainui at Lyttolton a number of drums of u'l disappeared. Yesterday the police visited the premises of Eudoe Anderson, a sailmaker, a well-known resident. He denied all knowledge, and a search seemed hopeless until it wa3 discovered that there was an aperture in the ceiling, inside which were eleven drums. The police subsequently arrested Robert Helmstalk and Thomas Jones, on charge of theft of the drums, and Anderson on a charge of reviving the stolen property. They were remanded till (Wednesday.
FIREMEN'S CONTRACT RESCINDED. ,
Wellington, March 27. Satisfactory arrangements having been made by the Shipping Company, the Magistrate's Court to-day made an order rescinding the contract entered into by a fireman on the Tainui to make the round voyage.
