Stratford News

(From Our Resident Reporter.)

Stratford, Friday. On Thursday the consecration and installation of a Royal Areli Chapter took place at the lodge room, Regan Street. A large number of visitifig brethren were presents The ceremony was performed by Mr. E. H. J. Williams, of Wellington, assisted by tiwj Rev. A. T.

I'orritt, Brothers Palmer, Priestly and Ashwcll. The new chapter is called " Kgmont." After the ceremony, the brethren sat down to a banquet, tastefully laid out by Mrs. Brooking. Yesterday the Toko sports were lield, and were well attended. Visitors were present from all parts, and the special train from Stratford was well patronised.

The East Road Club's dog trials were started yesterday, and arc being continued to-day. A number of outside owners are competing with their dogs. Mr. J. T. Walsh, of the Bird Road, met with a painful accident a few; days ago. He was rushed by a bull and gored in the shoulder. Dr. Stevens attended the sufferer, and had to put in several stitches. It is marvellous that Mr. Walsh escaped serious : —v.

On Good Friday the 1 L;:roy and Manaia * Bowling Clubs will visit , the local green, and play a match against the Stratford Club. On Easter Monday the West End Club will play at Stratford.

The air is full of shooting challenges at present. Last night the Home Defence Corps beat the Kgmont Club by 13 points, after a close tussle. ' The Stratford Dairy Factory has challenged the Railway, the Mountain Club the Postal Department, Mr. Newton King's staff and the Defence Corps, v«e National Bank and the Bank of ?7ew Zealand, and I understand the most interesting match of the lot is the Borough Council and the Electric Light Company. The following were successful in the

"art of teaching'' examination held in Stratford last December, by the Trinity College of Music, London:— Miss Clara Bischoff 81, associate (.Miss Rielly, Hawera, teacher); Miss Barbara Riera 74, associate (Stratford Convent); Miss Mary Fcnnell 73, associate (Hawera Convent); Miss Gertrude Dromgool 67, certificate (Stratford Convent). Miss Riera is, I understand, the youngest candidate that has even passed in this difficult examination. The aniiual meeting of the Stratford Goli Club is down for Monday evening.

THE GYMKANA.

\vc would remind exhibitors that en-

tries for the Stratford gymkana close to-night at eight o'clock. Already good support has been afforded this popular fixture, and we predict that by the time of closing record entries in all classes will be received. All that is required is a fine day, and if the association is fortunate enough in striking it, a record crowd is certain.

The Stratford Home Defence Corps is erecting a miniature rille range on the grounds, and some valuable trophies have been presented for competition. Tliis, of course, will be open to the general public, and should prove very interesting.
