ESCAPE FROM SOMES ISLAND.

LONG SWIM TO PETONE.

Wellington, Last Night.

Two young German prisoners of war —Edwin Balke and Paul Woolf—made their escape from Somes Island yesterday morning by swimming to the mainland. They left the island with their clothes strapped on their backs at 8.15 o'clock, and swam a mile and a half to the Petone beach, where they landed shortly after 10 o'clock. The water was cold and fairly choppy at the time, and the escapees had rather an adventitious time. One had a seizure of cramp en the journey, and Balke lost his clothes. The men gave themselves up to the police at Petono on their arrival, and they were little thc worse for their undertaking. They stated to tne police that they were engaged on the island doing road work, and they considered this more in the nature of convicts' work than the duty of (prisoners of war. They decided to escape and make a complaint.
