BELGIAN RELIEF FUND.

SETTLERS' PINE RESPONSE.

LEPPERTON, SENTRY HILL AND HUIRANGI CONTRIBUTION.

That the Taranaki farmer sympathises with his confreres in Belgium in the irreparable loss that the latter has suffered in resisting the devastating hordes of German soldiers, and is prepared to do his little to help to assist them in their hour of trouble, has been evidenced in a practical manner in various parts of the province, where pic- . nics, gift auctions, etc., that have been held in aid of the fund have met with ready and solid support. This was never more in evidence than at the old Waitara racecourse at Lepperton yesterday, when the settlers of the districts of Lepperton, Sentry Hill afnd Huirangl combined in a patriotic picnic and gift auction. The settlers arc to be con- . gratulated on the magnificent and unanimous response that they made to the committee's appeal, as the result ! of which it is expected that nearly £3OO will be added to the funds. The majority of this was gathered by donations of cash ( £56 17s) and by a gift sale, and, as will be seen from the list appended, the gifts were numerous and varied, including every description of stock, from pedigree Jersey cattle down to bantam roosters and canaries, whilst sundries were numerous enough to stock a general provision store. iAH, too, met with a steady sale, the auctioneer, Mr. W. Matthews, being in his best form. He kept the crowd in merry mood, and bids came so freely that his colleague, Mr. J. Cumming, was kept busy booking up the sales for some hours. The proceeds of the sale amounted to £149 9s lOd, all clear profit. A bantam donated by Miss Olga Openshaw produced £2 7s fid. The committee in charge of the gift auction were Mrs. Culpitt, Messrs. H. B. Lepper, F. W, Atkinson, F. Andrews, F. Crowe, T. Paul, and F. Smith. They must have canvassed the district thoroughly, and Master M. Atkinson had a busy time carting gifts to and from the station. The attendance was good.

A large committee of ladles had charge of the afternoon tea arrangements, and they provided a bountiful repast, which found such appreciation that thev were kept husy all the afternoon. This important committee comprised Mesdames Sampson, F. Sampson, H. B. Lepper, E. W. Wheatley, T. X. Blackball, Payne, Culpitt, Cartwrlght, Openshaw, F. Andrews, Clarke, Misses Smith. Spence, Herrick, Stewart, Lepper, James, and Cartwright. Messrs. Oliver, Te Puku, and Ihia rendered valuable assistance in this department. Misses Wheatley (2), Little, and Atkinson had charge of the sweets stall, which added £5 15s to the general fund. Messrs. Bernard and Candy and Master Atkinson attended to the soft drinks stall ( £2 lis), and Mr. y. Sampson to the refreshment stall (£2 2s fid). The fish nond (£2 14s) was looked after by Messrs. W. Messenger, Fredcrickson, 0. HVright, and Ormandy. The shooting gallery (in charge of Messrs. W. Tiison and L. King) realised/£1 13s 4d; skittles £3 4s 2d, and sheep guessing £1 7s 6d.

The Sports Committee comprised Messrs Eustace, N. Sampson, M. Leaner, F,. Hellier, and T. Baker. Owing to the length of the sale, the sports had to be curtailed, but the following events were run off. Mr. J. Cloke acting as starter and Mr. Hellier as handicapper:— Cutting Turk's Head: H. Hodgetts 1. Twenty-five entries. Potato Race: M. Lepper and W. Hellier (dead-heat) 1. Twelve entries.Apple Bobbing: iA. Hellier 1, W. Hellier 2. Kicking the Football: F. Sampson 1, D. Cople 2. Thirty-two entries. Rescue Race: A. Patu 1, P. Sole 2. Eight entries. Ladies' Chain Stepping: Miss. Herrick 1. Men's Chain Stepping: E. W. Wheatley 1. Sheep finessing. The three sheep weighed 5741b. The nearest guess was sG3lb, but this had no name, so the prize was awarded to Mr. ;P. A. Openshaw, with 5C111). and he donated the prize to the Belgian Fund.

The children wore well looked after, numerous races being run for their benefit. Mr. W. A. Brown and Miss Meade controlled this department. Mr. Bert Crowe was kept busy running his car around the course, thus adding to the children's enjoyment and to the funds. The officials all worked well. Messrs. W. A. Brown and N. Sampson, the joint secretaries, had the affair well organised, and the big programme was got through well, Mr, F, W, Atkinson supervised tI!S auction arrangeTucnts, and Mr. V. Crowe promptly made out the various accounts, the buyers keeping the treasurer (Mr. W. Roberts) confined in the office all the afternoon receiving the money. All told, £253 17s was taken, and there are other amounts to be added, as well as the proceeds of a concert and dance held in the evening.
