as member of the National Council of Education.

To-day is the 70th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of St. Mary's Church, New Plymouth. '1 he stone was laid by Captain Henry King, R.N., New Plymouth's first magistrate.

The photograph of the late Mr. K. (i. Allsworth, a former chairman of the. Taranaki Education Board, is to be added to the row of photographs of exchairmen now adorning the wall of (he board room. This will complete the list. In a dispatch received by Senator Pearcc, a notification appears or the appointment of Major-General Birdwood, who is in charge of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India.

The last shot in an eighteen hours' engagement seems to have carried him off. To us it has left a blank in life that nothing can fill, but we are proud of his end, doing his duty for King and country at the head of his men. If we had another son we should desire him to equally obey their country's call; In these times self must be obliterated." ,

Majo*r (Peacock, officer commanding the Maori contingent, was put ashore sick at the first port at which the troopship sailed. Major' A. H. Herbert, of the 9th Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles Regiment, who sailed for Egypt with the Third Reinforcements, has benn selected to replace Major Peacock in command of the Maoris. Major Herbert' is a well-known resident of Eketahuna. In 1911 he stood as a candidate, for the Masterton seat, and when defeated at the first ballot he supported the candidature of Mr R. Gs Sykes, who won his seat at that election, and again at last election.

The Board of Education yesterday decided to nominate Mr. H. Trimble (chairman of the Board) as a candidate for election to; the National Council of Education as one of the two representatives of Education Botwds in the NovthIsland. Mr. Masters, in nominating Mr. Trimble,, considered that the Board should hot follow'the lead and support candidates nominated by other boards, but should act on their own initiative. They must not assume that the Tai'rtnaki district was to be wiped out of ,'Xistence. He referred in eulogistic terms to Mr. Trimble's fitness for the position. Messrs Morton (the seconder), A-l-lam, Marfell, and Halcombe endorsed these remarks. Mr. Trimble, in placing himself in the hands of the Board, said that he had always been interested in educational matters, and, if elected, would do his best to forward education's general interests.
