THE PRICE OF MILK.
FARMERS INCREASE THEIR CHARGE.
RETAILERS OBJECT.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night.
Tlie Wellington city retail milk vendors arc up in arms against the proposal nf the Farmers' Association to increase tlie price of milk to retailers. The Farmers' Association comprises between two and tliree hundred members, supplying something like three thousand gallons dailv to tlie city. The Association fixed the price of milk twelve months ahead, and in October last a circular was issued fixing the following prices:—October Ist to February 28. Old per gallon; Starch 1 to April 30, Sd; May 1 to August 31, 10d. Tn addition, the purchaser has to pay the freight of over one penny per gallon. The farmers now ask tenpence per gallon for .April, and in a recent circular the members of the Association are advised to make no arrangements for the future, as a fm'the:' rise is anticipated. The retailers' Association objects 'o paying the increased, price, anil'has informed the Farmers' Association that it intends t„ keep to the terms of the ar rangenients already made with suppliers to pay eightpenee per gallon and no more.
There is, therefore, a prospect of a struggle between the producers ami the retailers, with results inconvenient for the general public. The present retail price in the city is fourpence per quart or Is 2d per gallon, reduced to Is in case of large quantities.
