Mr Alexander Powell, war correTOondcr.t of the New York World, addressed the American Club at a luncheon party at Ottawa recently. His stories of German atrocities witnessed by himself created a profound impression on his audience, who inclutrM-iiienibers of the Cabinet, military men, and several oth"i' prominent people, including Sir Wilford Lanrier. In one case a man and his son were dragged out of their homes and bayoneted in the presence of the mother and daughter as revenge for the killing of a Lilian who was ivullv shot bv a Belgian soldier. Mr Powell' snid:--"T counted twentv bavonet wounds on (lie face and neck of tl'ie fattier. I helped to bury the victims.*' A woman, carrviii" a baby was overtaken, and the babv shot. ' . - - .
lie also himself entered a, cottage, an.i saw a girl, still alive, with both hands and feet cut oli'. lie said he felt it his duty to make these facts public, as he found many in Canada anil the States who were not willing to believe the reports of atrocities. He said he wished to impress on Canadians that a long and hard light was ahead. "It will be a terrific struggle," said Mr Powell, "to drive the Germans back upon their own soil, but you've put vonr hand to the plough, and 'there should be no turning back till the furrow is completed."
