MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
DEPUTATION T.) MR. C. H. BURGESS
In view of liis announced decision to retire from the municipal body, a deputation of representative citizens waited on Mr. C. H. Burgess yesterday morning to endeavour to persuade him to reconsider his decision.
Mr. E. Griffiths, who acted as spokesman, said the position at the present time was a very serious one for the council and for the town. Big worKs were, being undertaken, and it was imperative that there should be good business men on the council. They recognised that Mr. Burgess had proved himself a general in business, and earnestly hoped, therefore, that lie would allow himself to be nominated for another term at any rate. Mr. Newton King, M. Ewing, and others endorsed Mr. Griffiths' remarks.
Mr. Burgess said lie considered a great compliment had been paid to him by the deputation in asking him to allow himself to be nominated for the council. When he joined the council a few months ago it was on the understanding that it was only to the end of the present term. There was a great deal of work to be done and big calls were made upon a man's time. Personally he felt there were quite a number of - younger men who should come forward and take an interest in the public life of the town. However, under the circumstances," a man could not say no to the deputation. The deputation thanked Mr. Burgess for agreeing to come forward again &ni withdrew.
