THE MONEY MARKET.
ENGLAND'S ENORMOUS WEALTH. An Otago Daily Times reporter had a very interesting conversation the other day with a leading Dunedin sharebroker in regard to the present buoyant state of the liritish and colonial investment stock market and the present remarkable cheapness of money. The sharebroker had some interesting remarks to make in connection with the prospects of obtaining ,t cheap supply of money after the war. "Astonishment is often expressed," he said, "at money being so cheap in New Zealand and in England. Most people, thought that when war broke out up would go the price of money. That it has remained cheap, and indeed cheaper ill England than for many years, is almost bevond comprehension. What is the positionlt is only now that the wealth of the liritish Empire. anil England particularly, is being realised. Recently Mr Lloyd George staled ihut England could, if necessary, finance 111 r war for the next live years out of investments abroad. At the present time large sums of money are being spent in England by ihe various countries of Europe. Russia alone is spending over .€70.000.(100. There is no question that the position in. England is remarkable. Every fortniglit about C.'SO.o(io,ooo of the Avar loan is paid into the Treasury and paid out again. It is a constant transfer backward ami forward between the .JiflVrent iMliking accounts. and the gold balances, which are slain! („ j„. between .E.'ioO, 000,(J00 and IM 00,000.000, remain inlaid. Almost all of this money i,s being spent in England. Instead of money b"ing (!(•:!!' ill ei'tev the war, it is possible !ha! it n:;;y lie no dearer than it was b-fi'i'e the war began.
