THAT WET CANTEEN.
OPPOSED BY DEFENCE MINISTER.
AN UNEQUIVOCAL STATEMENT.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night, in reply to representations of the Moderate League on the subject of a wet canteen at Trentham camp, the Minister of Defence says:—"My attitude Is absolutely clear. I see no need for any wet canteen, and I have no intention of recommending it. I think all our objects can bo attained without establishing a wet canteen at Trentham. As I said to the Moderate League, I am not bound by any law to adhere to one definite opinion on the subject. My mind is open to conviction, but ;I think it will take a great deal to convince me that it would be a wise thing to establish a wet canteen at the camp. Besides, such a step would be against the law, and I have no desire to break the law unless there is reason sufficiently urgent to justify me doing so, and I see no such urgent reason at the present time. lam convinced that at present the proper thing to do is to keep the wet canteen out of the' camp."
