THE NEW ZEALANDER. He is strong and sunburned brown, As he marches through the town, With his company all marching well ii line, Hut tlicv wanted awful taming, And thev got it with the training And the* Colonel says they're iookinj really fine. Now he's oil' to do some sailing. Though he's bound to do some bailing When the ocean starts a heavin' bif and rough. And he's fed oil stew and bacon, But it never lacks the takin' And at Christmas time he sleeps on ricl , plum-duff. . i: Now he's camping on the sand, In a dry-burnt foreign land, And lie's shooting and lie's drilling al the day, But lie gets bis forty winks, And he's seen the blessed Sphinx, And all the time he's drawing half liis pay. And Cairo says lie's spending But lie also (iocs some sending To hU mother, and his girl and sister Sue, And the Empire says lie's perky, For he's had a bang at Turkey, And is waiting for a bang at Willielm, too. And they say that he's a "gent," That young, strong man that went, To fight his Empire's battles to the last But tliey will not find him napping, If there's any risking scrapping, And he'll fight, as fought bis kinsmen in the past. —Harry B.
