HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary mooting of the High School Board of Governors was held yesterday. Present : Messrs W. N. Kwing, Jf. Eraser, i). Hutchen, A. Mcllardy, . R. P. W.-I.s'er, t-r.il !)". Eookes. In the absence of Mr. E. Dockrill, Mr. Ewing 1 was voted to the chair. Mr. 1). Hutchrn wrote acceding to the Board's request that lie should withdraw his resignation. Members welcomed Mr. Hutchen back to the Board table. PRINCIPAL'S REPORT. '■ Mr. W. 11. Moyes, Principal of the Boys' High .School, reported that the roll now stood at 2(1(1, mad.- up as follows: Upper School, 144; lower school, 5(1. One boy had entered during the month and two had left. The stall' now include;! six permanent assistants in the upper and two in the lower schools: Tn addition, Mr. Buxton and Mr. llntton were part time assistants, and Mr. .Tenkinson was conducting the gymnastic classes. Miss Pike, Miss Howling and Mr. Kenaud were taking the music pupils, and Mr. Sutherland had charge of the boxing. As tile Board would be going into the question of salaries at the present meeting, he respectfully suggested that the ] 0)1ey should be allotted according to the new Act. As the examinations for senior free places took place about August it would be seen that the boys entered had been working at a great disadvantage. He asked the Board to allow him to spend a fum of C"> on fruit trees. These could b; 1 attended to by the agricultural boys, who would thus gain valuable experience in this branch of agriculture. Some members were of opinion that the fees paid at the school were too low, and should be raised to bring Hum into line with those at other schools. On the motion of Messrs Eraser and Webster, Mr, Moyes wns given authority to Secure the military horse a*id r fruit trees. I. V THE GIRLS' SCHOOL. I* Miss Hodges, principal of the Girls' High School, reported that the work was progressing steadily. The roll number for tin: senior school was (ill. With regard to the boarding establishment, she" reported that several girls had been ill . with the prevailing type of influenza, , l>»t all were now quite recovered. * - PROPOSED EXCHANGE. j Referring to the conference between the Borough Council and the High School Board relative to the proposed exchange of a portion of the Tiigli School property for some of the Borough leasehold reserves, the Town Clerk wrote to the ('.feet that consideration of the, matter had been deferred until the return of the deputation from Wellington. He also wrote that the Council could not sec its way to consider the question of selling any portion of the Avenue Road property. On the motion of Messrs Hutchen and , Uebster. it was resolved to obtain ! through .Mr. Roy the opinion of Mr. Bell iito the Hoard s power to acquire leasehold property, and whether (he Board has [lower to exnend its funds on building thereon a boarding house, not a school.
