DISTRICT NEWS.
OKATO. A very pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mr Manu Kongo, by residents of Okato last Tuesday night. The occasion was the approaching marriage of Mr Manu's eldest daughter Alice, to Mr John Tuku. Items to the evening's enjoyment were contributed by the following ladies and gentlemen: Songs, Miss Auld, Mrs Vincent, Miss Daisy Manu; Messrs Willis. Cable, Booker, and Skipper; native dance and haka by Miss I). Manu and Tamati. Mrs Fox played the accompaniments with Mr Badam on the violin. At a sumptuous repast provided by the host and hostess the future Mr and Mrs John Tnku's health and happiness was proposed by Mr Booker, and Mr Fox proposed to tlie parents of the bride a similar toast. After suitable responses and full justice had been done to the crood things provided, the re?t of the evening was given over to dancing, the guests ,i»narting in the early hours of the morning.

Church service was held iri tthe local school 011 Sunday evening la-i, the officiating minister being the Rev. W. "It. Hedlev, Church of England m'issioner for the baekblocks. who has recently been appointed to that charge. There was a fairly large congregation, Mr. Hedl very appropriately selected for bis text the first and second verses of the fifth chapter of St. Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians. and during his discourse fcelinglv emphasised the necessity of his hearers associating themselves more earnestlv with the teachings of the great Apostle, thus following up the true doctrines of Christianity, as set forth in the text, and which is so essential in our everyday life. Mr. Iledlev purposes 'holding church service here mi the first Smidav in each month, and the next service will be held on Easter Sunday, when the rev. gentleman hopes to administer Holy Communion in the early morning, and at a tune most suitable for the district. The return (Ticket match, south v. Xorth Pifkearnhe. wa- played on Mr. <O. ■T. Butlers grounds. Minui. and created quite as nmeh. if not morv 'interest tha-n the former game. The weather was fin., and everything proved most enjoyable., The southern end were again iHte easv victors, owing to the rrores-s'heeets lint: being available. 1 am unable to give the' individual figures.
