» MEAT FOlt THE ARMIES. FIRST GOVERNMENT SHIPMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The first Government shipment of meat for the Imperial Government is on board the Ruahine, which sails to-day. It comprises 27,274 carcases of mutton and lamb. This is not the full shipment, as private space was previously arranged for. Mr. Mns-ey stated that it had been saiil that certain freezing companies had declined to all'ord facilities to producers for putting meat through their works 011 their own account and silling it to the Government f.0.1). ITe had communicated with the freezing companies, twenty of.whom had replied denying the allegations. The following telecgram has been received by the Prime Minister from the Imperial authorities in regard to the disposal of the surplus meat exported form New Zealand: —"The intention is that any meat not required for the allied forces shall be placed on the market through the ordinary channels and dealt with by the agents who have hotherto had specific brands pass through their hands.'' This, says Mr. Masscy, is a very important matter for the companies who have been doing business here, because it maintains their connection with their clients, so far as it is possible to do t. THE PRICE OF BREAD. Wellngton, Last Xight. Referring to the reported decrease ol 20 per cent, in the demand for bread ii Ghristehurch, Mr. A. Kavan, president ol the Wellington Master Makers' Associ ation, stated that the decrease local';, was about 5 per cent. A rise in the prici of bread was always accompanied by : . lesser demand, which generally lastei only a week or two. People for a whili were, more economical, but the. demani 1 returned to the normal when they grev accustomed to the price.
