LETTER FROM GENERAL GODLEY. SOME "MARE'S NESTS." • , By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, March 11. General Godley, in a letter to the Min- '_ ister of Defence states that the attack of tin; Turks on the day they arrived on the Suez Canal was very feeble. If the \ Turks succeed in making any better ef- . fort he expects the rest of the New Zealanders will go also. The satisfactory ' part is that, out of a whole corps (40,000 men) one infantry brigade (4000 men) being required, 'the New Zealanders should have been the one selected to go. General Godley adds: "We are much amused at your cable about the throatcutting episode in low quarters of Cairo. f 1 expect some wag has been pulling the - newspapers' legs. As a matter of fact, i our men get on exceptionally well with all the Egyptians. There * have been t practically no instances with us even yf - brawls with the natives." 1 General Godley also refers to the rum- - or about gifts being so ],[ j n t ] le canteens - as a mare's nest. , A PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL. ii NETS £OOOO FOR THE BELGIANS. „" Timaru, Last Night. , A great patriotic carnival and har- (; vest festival was held here to-day in aid t of the Belgian Fund.
