PAYNTER'S LANE. - The' Mayor reported that •Mr Barry - p had explained his willingness to fall in with the Council's wishes in regard to ,4 widening Paynter's Lane, and would be quite willing to give the 23ft of land necessary. :ss§ The matter was held over, as certaiij '! formalities had to be complied with before the work could be undertaken. .' DEVON STREET s>OOTBATIIS. ■ Cr Collis moved that the resolution giving the Borough engineer authority '.Jj to lay concrete flag-stones on both sides of Devon streeet from Robe street t? tS Brougham street be rescinded, and that he be authorised to lay concreto fluids V# on the north side, between Egraont $ street and Brougham street. lie felt 'J that the Council would be hardly jinf.l- - in tearing up the footpath from the Government buildings to Broughamstreet and replacing it with flags at a ■ '3 cost of £2OO, while expenditure was re- "'J quired in other places. Some portions s» might require to torn up. These could ' "'1 be replaced with flags. " Cr Clarke impressed on councillors the need for doing work of a permaneut ' C nature. Had the Council adopted that ".'I principle twenty years ago tlie borough would have been in a better position /j now. He urged attention being paid to- 4j the centre of the town first. 3
Cr Ambury questioned whether the ex- ,'3 penditurc was worth while. Cr Sykes supported Cr Clarke. '.i The Mayor said that £3OOO had been "?s« allocated in the loan for tarring and | sanding, which cost hundreds of pouwft '■ annually to maintain. It would lie' a mistake to do any more in that diretion. After further discussion, the resolution was held over until next meeting, whon ' the engineer will be present. " ji
