The Western Front
[ THE POSITION IN ALSACE. FRENCH MASTERS OF THE SITUATION. Received 8, 0 p.m. London, March 8. The Times' correspondent in Alsace says that tlie French are mastera of the situation in the Valley Largue and Valley St. Martin. The Germans are making Altkireh the pivot of their movement. The town is extensively fortified, entrenchments having been constructed by civilian labor under compulsion. Tlie Germans liave received large reinforcements in Minister Valley, including some Austrians and heavy guns, causing tlie French to slightly' retire, bringing tlie Germans uncomfortably near tlie top of the pass.
REGAINED A FOOTING. FKENCII SUCCESSES. Received 8, 11.5 p.m. Paris, Marcli 8. Official: We have regained a footing in the strongly fortified wood west of Perthes, and carried another trench north of Boausjour. We repulsed five counter-attacks at Hartmonns."Wtllerkopf.
TO CALAIS THIS TIME. GERMAN REINFORCEMENTS. Received 8, 11.5 p.m. Amsterdam, March 8. A large force from the Eastern front has arrived at Tournai. Germans at Bruges boast that this time they will reacli Calais. CHURCHES IN RUINS RHEIMS STILL UNDER FIRE. Amsterdam, March 7. Every church in the Pixmude district has been damaged, and forty hare been demolished. Abbe Demen, of Essen, was shot in a churchyard, and the burgomaster of Handzoemc was shot. ANOTHER ZEPPELIN GONE. Paris, March 8. British and French airmen bombed and destroyed a Zeppelin at Bcthunc.
