RAISING MEN AND PRICES. GREAT BELGIAN RELIEF SCHEMA. Sydney, March 5. The Lord Mayor presided at a large meeting in the Town Hall, at which all sections of opinion were represented, to consider the Belgian appeal. On the motion of Mr Holman. seconded by Mr Wade, it was decided that all citizens of the State be invited to participate in the formation of a National Fund to afford immediate, sustained and effective relief. It was also proposed that the mayors throughout the State form district committees. Mr Holman anticipated that the appeal would realise in the vicinity of £30.000 monthly. Until the collecting machinery was in working order the Government was prepared amply to make good any shortage. . On the motion of Archbishop Wrght, seconded by Father O'Gorman :i str_.ni,' representative committee, with "Mr Cam as president was appointed to carry out the scheme. The Commodities Commission recommended an increase of sixpence a ca-e on petroleum and kerosene, owing to increased freights from America. Recruiting is very active, while the rifle club movement is growing apace. Judge Docker, dealing with a mi'.itary prisoner, strongly condemned allowing drunken soldiers to go to the front, "hey would bring disgrace on Australia, and do more harm to their own side than to the enemy.
