THE lIAWERA CLUB. Tli ' opening of (lie season \v:i; celebrated on the llav.era links on Wednesday afternoon, when, favored with ideal weather conditions, a large number of members and their friends assembled and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon's sport Before play began, the. president (Mr R D. Welsh) on behalf of the club, welcomed visitors and new members, l'n declaring the season oisen, he said this the club owed a debt of gratitude to their pievieus vice-president-, Mr A. S. 'J'onks, f pioviding such excellent country. He was certain that the club had made a very wise move i n accepting the offer. Tile links were now in very good order. The committee had worked hard, especially the green committee, who had. been very much handicapped in the matter by the weather. Messrs. Barley and O'Callaghan deserved the thanks of the club for (he good work put in on the course during the season. ''Many of our members," concluded the President, now serving at the front, and our' thoughts to-day are with them. W" expect that still more will be leaving, e.sl )ncn are required." In formally declar-! mg the season open, the President called for three cheers for the King and the King's soldier,i, which were given mo-t! heartily.
The play was then proceeded wiJi, mixed foursomes being the competition played. The winners wore Mrs McLean und Burgess, all square. The other best cards wees handed in by Mrs French and Elliott, Miss Hunter and L'lair Mis i r.lunn and Tonks, all one down: Mrs and Mr (rlasson, 3 down, Miss P. Youn« ?nl Layley, 3 down.
