GENERAL HERTZQG'S POSITION. Capetown, March 3. The Assembly accepted Mr Merrimnn's amendment that a Select committee should be appointed by the Speaker, in preference to General Hertzog's motion for a select committee to inquire into the causes of the rebellion.
Mr Smuts declared, that for years General Hertzog had been the loudest mouthed politician in South Africa; now he was the most silento. He was one of the primary causes of the recent disasters but still sat in Parliament.
General Hertzog, in reply, said lie did not intend to repudiate his view that the rebellion was provoked by the expedition to German territory, which had sheltered the rebels after the Boer war.
