A railway smash occurred at Wallacetov,')! crossing tiiis morning, when a goods train from Nightcaps struck a motorcyclist, who was thrown oft* his machine on to the cow-catcher. The cycle struck the pointsman, who was sitting on the lever, knocking him down. The engine left the rails, followed by seven coal and grain-laden waggons, which tore up the permanent way for a chain and a half. The engine was badly damaged, and several waggons were capsized and smashed. The driver, fireman, and cyclist escaped uninjured. The line was blocked until late this afternoon. OIL EXGINE S IN JUNES. ™'~ Greymouth, March 3. At the adjourned inquest on James Walker, wlio was found drowned in the Iloi-iisletley tunnel workings, the theory of Mr. Bishop, Inspector of Mines, was I'iii.t deceased was overcome by the fumes from the oil engine exhaust pipes, winch latter had an outlet on a separate incline of the drive. The pipes showed * leakage at nearly all the joints, and tiie air-current had been reversed. There were no special regulations dealing with oil engines underground, neither was it necessary to notify the. department that such were in use. The inspector, in reply to a question, said his opinion wns that the regulations concerning noxious fumes from steam engines should also be applied to oil engines. A doctor's testimony supported the theory that deceased died of carbon monoxide poisoning, having lower resistance than normal through an extensive adherence of the right lung to the chest-wall. The verdict was that death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
