DISTRICT NEWS.
AUROA. (Frow our own Correspondent.) A deputation from tlio Auroa Sports Clul) waited on the Okaiawa Sports Club on Monday night last, for the purpose of trying to induce tli,> latter club not to hold their meeting on Easter Monday, as the Auroa Club had ahvavs had that day." The deputation's plea was that both meetings being on the same day, (and both clubs devoting their .profits to -elief funds) that neither snorts would be a success. 'Unfortunately Okaiawa would not entertain the proposal,' but as the ykaiawa- elub is an unregistered and Auroa a registered club, the interests of good clean sport would have been best served by acceding to the request. Very keen interest is being taken in local tennis at the present time, as "ladders" have been brought into vogue, and ladder matches are the order of the day, every player being anxious to get up as high as possible. A 'party of bowlers anticipate travelling to Opunake next Wednesday to try conclusions with the latter club. By reading about the distress and suf- ! fering in Belgium caused through the present crisis, and the Commission's plea for assistance. I think it would show' Mr. Massey's statesmanship to call Cabinet together and strike a war tax upon every man in New Zealand as a minimum of 5 per cent., thus bringing everybody into line. There are hundreds who have given not only money, food and clothing, but also sons to fight for freedom, yet there are thousands who have given nothing at all, and would never give unlets compelled by law, so that it is only fair that as New Zealand is the land of freedom every man should willingly give 5 per cent of his income to a just and proper course My reason for writing thin is that if the Belgians had not held the Kaiser's hordes In abeyance it is quite possible that they would have got a foothold is Old England, and caused the same sufferings to our own kith and kin. So I wish the public, business men, as well as citizens, to take this matter up and deny themselves of sonv trifling luxury till the war is over, and give, give, and give again. The manager of the I.owgarth Dairy Company (Mr Bcattie) and bis directors paid a visit to the Kaupokonui dairy factory during the past week, as they are contemplating building a new factory, and b?for<. doing so are touring the district inspecting the latest designs in factory construction and labor saving appliances. / The water for the turbines at the fae- | tory will be turned on during the next fortnight, and there is every probability of a swimming elub being formed 'n Auroa. using the large dam as the swimming bath. Residents of Auroa will be pleased to learn that the tree has been planted, from which the posts are to be split to erect that long promised fence around the public hall, but I regret to state that . the ship that was bringing the paint for painting the hall lias been sunk, presumably by Cermany, as we have not received advice about same. RAHOTtt.
Mrs 'Wright's friends will lit' sorry to hear of the dentil of her motlior at Wanganui. Mr. Wright lirul left that very day for the Auckland district, where lie intends spending some time. Sorry to report tliat Mr Tliomas Wilcox, wlio lias been unwell for some time, was moved into the hospital yesterday. Rahotus shipment of cheese liy tlie Turakina realised ISSs per cut. The pav out for January milk amounts to ,ۥ22.17 l!'s lfld, lmt if this weather continues the nay out for March will be very small. The manager is to lie congratulated on his uniform grading of ihccse. iio>v scoring !V2 points.
