' TARANAKI SUCCESSES. (By "Moturoa.") 'Wav.ganui, Last Night. The Wanganui meeting was largely attended to-day. Taranaki visitors being present in good numbers. The track w.u in fine order, times being- very fast. Taranaki horses had a great innings. Tree Lucerne. Avon Park, Tirana, and Sty rax won races, and Astor, Invader, Quo Vadis, and Patronymic gained placemoney. The racing was splendid all ! through the day, and winners hard to pick, Styrax 'and Austin being the only , two favorites to score.
Fair Rosamond carried nearly one-half of the investments in the Stewards' Handicap, but was never dangerous. Aster led all the way, only being caught by Ladoga in the last fiftv yards. Invader finished fast in tlii" 1 "'"p and Banksis.. who had a bad run. was fourth. Another scorching hot favorite in .Goldstrcam went down badly in the Petre Handicap. Marimba made the early running but Avon Park was always handy, and easily smothered New York and Marimba in the straight, filling his supporters' pockets. Fortify was a 1 close fourth, finishing strongly, but Lad o' Gowrie was not prominent. Punters rightly sorted out Stvrnx and Flingot as the. best in the Wcstmc-rc Hurdles. Leapuki led for a mile and three-quarters, but the favourites had the finish to themselves, the Taranaki horse winning nicely.
Betting on Naupata, Tirohanga, and Row was very even in the Tayforth Hurdles. St. Gate and Naupata made most of the running, but Kew drew up at the turn and won easily. ; Byron was the onlv withdrawal frjam \ (he Wanganui C«p, nine horses soing to | the vost. Indigo was a warm favorite. but.' heavy support also came for, Rewi Foto, Kilrain, and Rinaldo. From a good pfart. Ooldsizc, Moutoa Girl, Chainlnade. mid blaster Lupin showed out. but the 1 latter soon forged ahead and led Moutoa j Givl, Obnminade, and Goldsize passing the stand. At the six furlongs post Master I Lupin chared right out. and along th?i back had a six lengths' lead of Rinaldo, Rpwi Poto. and a strung-out lot. with Tr.digo and Kilntin coming fast. Titdigo ran up to Rinaldo at the tliree furlongs post, but could not sustain the effort. Master Lupin entered the straight with a coini"anilins lend and although tiring at the finish won In- ncnrlv three leneths fro"i TiinnVl". who finished in a bulldog fashion. Kilrain was a fair third. Then elm.. Tndigo. Rewi Poto. and Marshal McDonald. Th" winner's time was easily a record for Now Zealand, and onlv a freeHon l—liind the A.isrra'asian record. ' Black Heart wa« an odds-on order !n| the Juvenile Handicap, but went down bv a narrow margin in a punishing finish . tr Tirana, who was prominent all the' wav. Bisogne shaped noorly. Austin was the public choice in the AViritoa Handicap, and after indulging •Svlvan Dale with the load to the turn, stalled off a strong challenge by Quo Vadis and scored a popular victory. The public could not separate the Fordell trained pair. Postillion and Ardent, in the Flying Handicap, and they carried the bulk of the money. Chakwana, Grattan. and Tree Lucerne were in front to the turn. Then the latter dashed fbromdi and won in easv fashion from Postillion and Enipo'vidor, who finished fast. Ineuru was close up, fourth.
