RESPONSE TO THE BELGIAN APPEAL.
It is very gratifying to find that our anticipations as to the ready response pi the people of Taranaki to the heartrending appeal of the Belgians-for food, were fully justified. A notabb ex-' ample is that of the proprietor of the Empire Picture Palace who at once arranged to give on? entertainment ai month in aid of th B fund. The first of these gift exhibitions at ttys pppular picture house takes place to-night, when it is hop?d that the pitblic will back up tli e kindly spirit of the proprietary by filling the house. The whole of the takings, without any reduction will be given to the fund. Another instance is that of Stephenson's Pantomime Company, who will take up a collection in town on Wednesday next. On Sunday Mr Xewton King's charming grounds will be thrown opsn. "Mrs George's orchestra liavc undertaken'to give their services to add to the attractions, the receipts also going to the fund, white in saver&l parts of the district gatherings are being organised for the same purposed This exhibition of practical sympathy is what might have been expected, and the community may be relied upon to do their utmost in this urgent, cause.
