The Taranaki Agricultural Societyhas, in the past, not been very fortunate in the matter of weather for its annual show, and, indeed, it was mainly on this, account that the committee som«

three years ago decided to change Horn spring to autumn. The fortieth annual snow opened yesterday under perfect weathe r conditions, enabling the judges, stewards and officials, to get through their arduous labor, so inseparable from

"ii first day" as expeditiously and under as pleasant conditions as possible. Should the same favorable weather conditions prevail today—and at the time of writing there is' every prospect of it doing so—thus permitting residents of Xorth and South Taranaki taking advantage of the train service, and other modern means of transit from all parts of Taranaki, there should be a record gathering To r People's Day, ami that is all that is needed to make the 1915 show an outstanding success. The oflleials have done their part, stock-own-ers have done theirs, and it now remains for the public to do theirs by attending in strong force. Yesterday, for an off-day, there Was a good attendance, and opinions were freely expressed that for general quality the exhibits exceeded any previous show, and as the first day visitor is usually the man who goes to the show for the purpose of learning something from what lie sees, his opinion should count. The show is well arranged, and several improvements are noticeable one that, has proved a great convenience being an event board. The stewards all knew their duty, and though tlie judging in some classes took a long time, owing to the ilifliculty the judges experienced in separating some strong classes, tile results came promptly into the secretary's tent and the award cards were quickly on the pens. The secretary, Mr A. L. Humphries, hud his end arranged methodically, and everything Kissed nir smoothly in that department. Mr C. K. Street, the society's organiser, kept a firm hand on outside'details. The ring events were kept well up to tin'.", the compel iti.his iii the afternoon proving very interesting, whilst the junipn«< shewn augurs well for the hi" .•rents this afternoon. There was one i-Tiill yesterday. Mr McKonzie's X T elli» coming down with K. Hooks, but the rider was able to remount and complete ♦lie course. The gift calf competitions Reduced thirty-six entries from all pans of Xorth Taranaki. though the coast towards Opnnake is not as well represents] .is one would expect. HORSES. ..; Light horses, as one of the judges: remarked, were ou!y uu average iot as far as lie had seen yesterday morning. Tlii'-j' were still, howewr, tiio hulk of mi' light harness and saddle classes to judge, and ha expected to have to pass .■ i in.' good animals in these sections. The draughts, however, were a pai•.icularly good class throughout, and tlie judge, Mr J. Patcrson, of ilVtca, was very enthusiastic over them. They were, V: remarked, a particularly good class cE horse, well got up and lit to compete in miv show ring. Among the competitors were several noted South Taranaki breeders, including Messrs .T. S. VOughton of Okaiawa. P. MeXaug'iton, of Patea, Thos. • Perry, of Mangatoki and J. D. Mitolicll. of .Manaia. The quality of the animals exhibited by these, breeders was an eye-opener to North Taranaki. FAT CATTLE. Mr A. T. Wills, of Ilawera, the judge in this section, considered thai tile bullock exhibited was a credit to Taranaki and could be shown anywhere. The Shorthorns were exceptionally food, 'and he found it exceedingly hard tv award the championship, having to call in another judge before making his final I decision.

REGISTERED SHORTHORNS. For the first time in the history of the Taranaki Show a place was found foi milking Shorthorns. One of the judges doubted if a similar class could be'found ' in any show. The innovation proved a success, as there was keen competition in all ckuscs. PEDIGREE UOLSTF.IK. Ywdi noted breeders like Messrs Newton King, of New Plymouth and W.l 1. Lovelock, of Palmcrston North, in I et>mp.,titioll, as well as Messrs A. 11. [ l Street, of Bell Block, and W. Cole, oi Waitara, it c,-n well lie imagined that there was hoi: competition in this section, and Mr C. T. Barriball, of Waiuku the judge, had a difficult task. Honors were well divided the championships being annexed by noted show animals. 'Mr Newton King's King Fayne Segis 1L was adjudged champion buii, and Mr Lovelock's King of Dominos j reserve, whilst the latter owner's Oak de Kol Forbes was adjudged champion cow, with Mr Newton King's Pietje Kitamora reserve. It was,, the judge acknowledged, hard to decide, and some judges might reverse the positions. In any case, he said, the reserve champions wore hard to beat, and all would more than hold their own in or out of the Dominion. The grades were a good class, showing that attention is being paid to the typo of bull used. j PEDIGREE AYRSHIRES. j There is nothing to complain about: in the show of Ayrshires, remarked Jilr J. Kyle, of Palmerston North, the judge in biiat section. At this time of the year he was surprised to see such good classes. One good thing, he said, was that they were g.tting rid of the short teat, which he considered was nn • ol jectioiiable feature, and should not be encou.'aged. All the cattle were shown in good condition. He remarked that Ayrshires generally managed tf> keep in fair condition, and did not re- , eeire pampering. There was strong competition in all classes. Some of the . two-year-olds were a particularly striking lhu'. The championship fell" to Mr ' Hall's Little .Tim. with Mr RawclitVs Piinee )f Pinelields as runner-up in the , Lulls, whilst Olson Bros, again secured the championship for cows with Louie of Haydowns.

PEDIGREE JERSEYS. J "A really good class,'' remarked I'll "K. Eagle, junr., of Carterton, who had mil exceedingly difficult and onerous ta<k J in adjiuiciating on the various animal*! paraded before liira. Though not per- \ liaps as numerous as e.t previous shows, the classes were very even, and the .placed animals, he said, had very little to boast about over their less favoured companions, because the Margins were I very close in the majority of cases. I Tin; animals were shown in good cc-n----.dition. Indeed, said tiie judge, with! the keen competition nowadays, cattle! must be got ready for fie show. It is I useless to show tiiein direct out of the ■paddock, as could be done four or fiveyears ago, when he was last here. Another noticeable feature was that the cattle had evidently been taught to lead, as they showed themselves off well before tile judge. Mr R. J. Linn annexed both championships, with Lor I Twylish and Genoa. Rose, Mr E. Grif■fiftfis' I'etime's Xnble being- reserve bull and Mr A. A. Ward's Miss Meadow Buttercup reserve cow. He was much struck with the grade calves, especially in the yearling sections.

SHEEP. Though numerically weaker, there was, for what is essentially a dairving district, a good chhibitiou of sheep. Unless breeders are careful, remarked the judge, Mr W. Cadshy, of TV Kuiti, the sheep exhibited in the (lock classes will be of better class than those that are purebred. Lincoln breeders, he considered, should pay more, attention to the Lincoln*, so as to bring tliem out. The Romnoy, classes were Tory good, and in these competition was very keen, more attention evidently being paid to them. TTo considered that Romncys and Lincolns were an ideal cross for this country, am l should be encouraged. iPIGS. Competition in pig. s i s Imlc li better than previous years, and the quality is good, bat numerically there is room for improvement, particularly in a district where pork should be such a valuable side line. DOGS. The dog section is growing i n importance, and this year with two challenge classes to be competed for, considerable interest is attached to it. Detailed results:—
