Vi'AXUAMUI NOTES. | Here in Wanganui everything i.< on the bustle in view of the four (la_vs gallop- j ii.g anil trotting which commence 0:1 'I hnrsday next. Tim town is tli«ro;H j with racing KVil Irnltiiijf hailing from nil pails of the Dei,;• i:i. ■ l.ml sport is the iopic of (he hour. The usual crowd of giiess.cheap jacks, painled iydirs, etc.. are ami Us.' dark gent and his ini.-si's lx>th with the cast-iron voice and tin 1 lunc!c-.s baeio. It. is tin' fun of tin l fair I suppose, but one docs feci lonely v.:;:u,ut the Auckland mendicant and his organ, churning (.lit spasmodic gasps from the Death ■: f Nelson, awl other late ballads. Truly, the racing crowd is the same all over. Monday night's acceptances were l'air, and presented few surprises. Of the fifteen entered for the Wanganui Cup, ten still hold their ground, and of the defectors it cannot be said that Pavlova or Kenya were harshly treated. The others had no chance anyhow. It is a matter for congratulation that th- New Zealand Cup dead-heater, Indigo, is still in, and with Ytewi Poto, Kilrain, Kinaldo and (loldsize also engaged a battle royal may be anticipated. The Flying Handicap is another race that should raise enthusiasm, the field of sixteen including Kninenulor. Tree l-neerno. Astor, Bimetrr, Postillion and other fine sprinters.
Taranaki is well represented in the Wanganui double, Rewi Poto and Chaminadc remaining in the Cup, and Tree T.wcorne. Astor, Tneuru and Ulenroy in the Flying Handicap. Fen' of our horses have reaeh;'il headquarters at time of writing, but their appearance will be commented on to-morrow. With the exception of the Hack Hurdles, all the minor events on ilip first day at Yvangamii have filled well. Nine fmure iu the Stewards' Handicap and the winner appears to lie well concealed. The defectors include Rewi Poto (who lias been reserved for the Cup), and Postillion. Tree Lucerne. Astor, Court - Martial and others which will start in (lie Flving Handicap, Rerehau, Want nnd Bivouac have dropped out of the Wiritoa Hack Handicap, leaving eleven l-'Oi-fes. including Patronymic, Austin, I.nbriline, anil other fair performers. The fourteen in the Petre Hack Handicap are a good lot, though Taranaki snorts would like to see The Dodger and King Cliia-a pitted against the other hacks. Aru'iVe and Panailor have not been paid up for in the Westmere Hurdles, but the eiijlit still in should provide a pretty race. Rtyrax and Timothy will carry some. Taranaki money. A ouartette only remain in the Tayforth Hack Hurdles', and Kew may be a pronounced favorite on the. day. On the whole the prospects for a fine meetina are very fair, and the chance of attending four days racing--I two of gallops and two of trotting—is one that should appeal to many Taranaki sports.
Track work has not been very brilliant at Wanganui. ■••tv little of importance rewarding t' "~" "-ho have ris-ei n.t !) a.m. each morninc to see the gallops. This (Tuesday) morning Himeter. Goldsize, Fmperador, Canella, St. Gate and Indigo all went well.
