THE SATURDAY COMPETITION. NEW PLYMOUTH CREEPING UP. The week-end compc.lt.ion was eontinned on Saturday in good weather. At Western Park, New Plymouth secured n two-point win over Law. and only time prevented them obtaining a threepointer. This match was marred by an injury wliieli Lush sustained to liis hand very early in the game. Mason drove Lash's second ball hard and straight back, breast high, to the bowler, who received it o n the right, hand, with the result that his thumb was put. out and the flesh so lacerated that the doctor found it necessary to put in five stitche;. The accident is particular] v unfortunate for the popular Law cricketer, as it will prevent him from following the game in which he takes such a keen interest and of which he is such a fine all round exponent. for the rest of the season. 'Te would have been of great assistance :.o Taranaki ill the Hawke Cup match, which commences to-morrow. All cricketers will sympathise with him in his ill-luck. United Service, for the third week in succession, had to submit to defeat, this time nt the lianda of Tikorangi on the Recreation Grounds to the tune of four wickets. Inglewood gained a two-point win over Albion by a good margin of runs at Inglewood. The match between New Plymouth and United Service next week will be vested with great interest as on it will depend I the championship. The best performances were:—■
NEW PLYMOUTH v. LAW. A two-point win for New Plymouth resulted from this match. The fates were very unkind to Law, for in the second over of jthe match they lost Lash, incapacitated while fielding a hot return off his own bowling. Mason drove the bail hard, straight down the pitch into Lash's hands, and the howler had the ■regrettable misfortune of breaking his right thumb. He had to retire and seek medical aid, his wounded hand requiring three stitches, as well as the reduction of the fracture. This loss weakened Low's attack considerably. The early wickets of New Plymouth's innings were got cheaply, however. Bottrill (20) and Hcskctt (18) being the only batsmen to stay any time. Later. Nieoil (IS), Stainton (not out 10), and Stohr (11) made useful contributions. Extras reached the unusual total of 21. nine being lee-byes. Elliott was bowling well, but could get. only one wicket for 45, and that one by stumping. Anderson, in seven overs, captured three for Hi. Law replied to New Plymouth's 123 with 74 —a highly creditable score in view of Lash's absence. Billing made 2ft by patient cricket: he gave several chances, however. Rowley (17) wag the only other to reach double figures. Nieoll had 22 knocked off six overs without getting a wicket, but, going on again at the end of the. innings, lie secured one. Tleskett, who eventually got Billing's wicket with a beautiful ball, and kept the batsmen very quiet, got four for 12. Going in again, New Plymouth declared at 41, Stainton (13) and Bottrill (24), who onened, being still unbeaten. Law replied with 41 for seven wickets. Bcwlcy batting very well for 28. including two fi's off Hcskctt. "Time" apparently saved Law a three-point defeat. Mason set two wickets for 1 run, and Heskctt four for 22 Ti>e scores are appended:—

ALBION V. INGLEWOOD. In tlie AlbTon-Inglewood match at Inglewood on Saturday, the home team won by a fair margin. The principal scorer for the winners, McDonald, was very lucky, but lie readied the total of 4'2. Nieholls must be considered fortunate in surviving an early appeal for l.b.w. Eighteen extras were scored against Albion. Following are the scores:
Bowling Averages: J. Martin, two for 23; O'Donnell, for four 14; Sutherland, one for 8; Clark, one for 37; W. Shepherd, one for 11; W Girling, none for 20.
TIKORANGI v. UNITED SERVICE. United Service opened with Rain and Osborne to the bowling of C. Foreman and O'Neill. They at once struck disaster. as C. Foreman yorjcod Bain with the first ball of the match, Osborne and McGie then became associated, and put up a fine stand, and though both were missed on two occasions, the score reached 45 before Sarten got Osborne, for 14. At 57 McGie was bowled by .Tupp with a, yorker for 34. His score included a fi and one boundary. Mackay, Purdue and Colvile went with but one added, and with the score at 58 for six wickets Service did not look like, making a decent score. However, a fine 11 by Tngram and a vigorous 18 by Dinniss • —which comprised four hits (three boundaries and a o—the innings closed for 104.
Tikorangi opened with G. Foreman' and .Tupp. Th 0 former hit Bain away | for a boundary and two singles, . and also put Dinniss to the fence, but with the score at. 11 Dinniss bowled him. Roberts and L. -Tupp then put up a fine partnership, which lasted over an hour and r half. Roth played careful cricket, only Ifi runs coming off as many overs. The ground fielding was fine, but some catches were dropped. At 70 Jupn was caught for a very careful but useful 18. Foreman went with 2 ?runs added, and at 82 Roberts played Bain on. He had plaved well, "and undoubtedly his partnership with .Tupp gave Tikorangi the match. O'Neill went quickly, and with five wicket*-, for 84 it was anyone's match. However. L. T.ve and Rev. Griffin put matters beyond doubt, and ten minutes before the call of time they passed the local team's total, and the score reached 121 before Lye was caught off Bain for 17. Service were defeated, bv four wickets. .Rev. Griffin was undefeated with 14. Detailed scores:—
