THE STRUGGLE IN GALICIA. SUBLIME COURAGE OF THE RUSSSIANS. GERMANS CLAIM SUCCESS IN PRUSSIA. London, February 17. Mr Donohoe, in the Daily Chronicle, reports that he witnessed the Aust.roGerman attack on Czernowitz. _ Two columns crossed the. Sereth River in tlio Storanzviietz region with appalling losses on Monday. They threatened to cut off the Russian retreat from Czernowitz and the fighting became desperate. The Austro-Gernians, reinforced by a column from Galicia, renewed the attack on Thesday at three points, regardless of losses, and gained the bottom of the valley. They then attempted to ascend the snow-clad slopes, hut the Russian artillery swept the, enemy awav. Wave after wave advanced, leaving thousands dead. Isolated groups flung themselves on the parapets and trenches. The Russians are hurrying up reinforcement". It is computed that the enemy have three army corps well supplied with artillery. Berlin, February IT. It is officially claimed that in the nine days' battle on the Mazurian Lakes the Russian Army was thrown across <'>" frrntier with great loss. Fifty "'•ii;and prisoners, forty cannons and machine guns were captured. It is also claimed that the Germans have occupied Flock. ■ Times and Svdney Sun Services London, February 17. Correspondents with the Russians describing the strength of the positions on tiie Iszura say that tho officers' dugouts are furnished with sofas, writing tables, pictures, and oil lamps. Austria has ordered a census to be taken. Famine is increasing to an alarming extent in Austria. A state monopoly is considered the only way of fending it off temporarily.

Received 18, 11.15 p.m. Potrograd, February 18. A communique, states that, the fighting on the right of the Vistula is. proceeding with extreme desperation, but only encounters between patrols in the Niemen region. We repulsed attacks in the Lubne Studenne district, taking 1400 -prisoners. We sustained impetuous attacks, which were repulsed with heavy loss at Wyszkow, almost the whole German battery being bayonetted.
RUSSIANS OUTNUMBERED. A TIMELY RETIREMENT. TO MARSHY GROUND. Received 18, 13.30 n.m. Petrograd, February 18. Eight or ten German army corps are operating in East Prussia. The, Russians expected to manoeuvre, but were outnumbered tenfold, and retired betimes, the Light Horse carrying on a running fight. After laying waste the entire region, both armies are disposing themselves on a flat track. The. forest country and marshes are under deep snow, which, is beginning to tiiaw.
