Mr. J. Hunter, of Hawera, lias been appointed judge of the North Island sheep-dog championship, to be decided at Taradale in June. Mr. C. T. Natusch, of /Wellington, is on a. brief visit to New Plymouth, on business in connection with the erection of the buildings for the electa tramways scheme. The friends of Miss Mary MeCartv (daughter of Mr and Mrs Jas. McCarty, of Auroa), who is at, present in a New Plymouth private hospital, will be pUW- ! Ed to Jearn that she is making good progress towards recovery after an operation. "Fair Play," tbe English shipping paper, of December 31st, announces that i Mr. Godfrey Iloldsworth has been appointed assistant manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company in London as from January Ist. Mr. Iloldsworth is the son of Mr. Charles TToldsworth, managing director of the Union Company. Mr. W. E. Ham. of Motueka, father of th e late Private Ham, fatally wounded in action near' the Suez Canal, was in Nelson on Sunday, and stated .to a representative of the Colonist that, in addition to his son, he has lost two cousins and a nephew in the -war. Two of his nieces are serving as nurses at the front. Mr. David Scott, of Wellington, who met his death by a railway accident at Otaki, was very well 'known as a lighthouse expert, and erected the lights at Palliser, Mokohinau, East Cape, Hikorangi Point, and many other points round the coast. Seafaring men, in fact, know these lights as "Soit's monuments," and he made many friends of the mariners who work the ports of the Dominion. 'Amongst Ills work for the Government was the re-arrangement of the light at Somes Island, transferring it from Mana Island. Mr. Scott leaves a widow, a son (Mr. Horace Scott, of Taumarunui), and three daughters..
Prior to the commencement of tSio business of the Stratford County Council yesterday, C'r Smith referred to the death of Mr J. A. Thomas, Minster of the Tuna school, a. son of Mr J. TWmi;i\ of Xgacre, a former Councillor. He moved that the Council extend its to Mr and Mrs J. Thomas, and also 'to the widow of the late Mr Thonws in their sad bereavement. Th's was seconded by Cr Christoll'el, and unanimously carried. The chairman, in asking for leave of absence to attend t!ii> funeral in the afternoon, said he was chiPnnan of the Tuna School Committee, and expressed his groat regret at. the loss of a teacher of such great promise as deceased, who had given entire satisfaction, and was tilie most popular teacher they had had in tilie district since IS<V2.
