MOKAU AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. > (From Our Own Correspondent.), The Mokau Axemen's Carnival, which was held on Tuesday last, was a most successful gathering. The weather being all that could he desired, there was a good attendance. Under the splendid ■leadership of the president, Mr. L. Jacob, th e committee worked like Trojans, and carried out their duties without a hitch. The judging was in the capable hands of Messrs A. Sampson and H. McCowan, with Mr. W. W. -Tones as referee, and although the finishes were very close, the decisions were received without question. The starting of Mr. James Eruini was a feature of the day, and was carried out so well that the competitors, public, and committee joined in giving him three of the heartiest cheers heard in the district. It was very much due to the energetic and capable work of the secretaries. Messrs. James B. Carr and 11. Maine, that the sporfs were such as to rank 1 as one of the best held in North Taranaki.
