AUROA. The annual school picnic, w.as lield at .lie Otakeho beach on -,Saturday last, nl was a great success. The children •re conveyed down in the waggons I udly lent by the residents. A large ajority of the parents were coni spicuous by their alweuce. The Sports Club held their annual meeting on Saturday night, when twenty members were present. The president (Mr. J. O'Dea) occupied the elu'.ir, and after the usual routine busi-. hubs was dispensed with (including the balance-sheet, which showed the. club to bo .Cl3O in credit), the election of olliccrs tool; place, resulting as follows: Patron, '.Mr. Dunn; president, Mr. J. , O'Dea; vice-president, Mr. Johnstone; secretary, -Mr. Burke; "treasurer, Mr. I Julian. It was decided to hold the j sports on Kaster Monday, and donate tlie proceeds to the relief funds, half to Great .Britain and .Belgium, and half to be reserved for Xew Zealandors. 'llr, Burke the secretary, was voted an honorarium of £lO His for his past services, and Mr. Bowman £5 for the use of his paddock. -Mr. J. Green, foreman for Mr. Amoore, is back at the factory, putting in th cturbinc, which, when finished, should prove beneficial 'to all concerned. The company are looking well ahead as regards power, for the turbine they are installing will develop 70 hurse-power. Mr. Green is also going to build the manager's cottage, which is to be of concrete. Tate Bros, have now shifted camp from Mangawhero • to the Otakeho river, and will be in full swing again in a day or two Pleasure-seekers are now making up parties for the. mountain, which is alwavs much appreciated bv young and' old'. Mrs W. Tait motoml a party up on Saturday, and when the descent was being made the brakes of the ear gave way, but with great presence of mind •Mrs. Tait switched oil' the engine and threw the car into gear, and let her run down on her own. Some of the settlers are having trouble with black-leg amongst theft' calves, one settler losing five out of twelve so far, and others are showing symptoms. ' The weather is extraordinarily dry just now .and playing havoc with the milk and the roads, the latter being very rough with loose stones. The .Toll Company opened their new factory on Tempsky road last week. It is built in concrete, and is one of the most up-to-date in Southern Taranaki. The threshing mill has been in the district this last week, and the crops are turning out very satisfactorily, both [ barley and oats being of a first-class sample, and meeting with keen demand.
NORMAXBY. TOWN' HOARD MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Monday evening. Present: Commissioners i'fr-e (in the chair). Cocker, R. Harris, K. C. Kiddle and Annison. The sanitary inspector drew the Board's attention to a drain from one of tile butchers' shops, running on to property opposite the railway station. — It was' resolved to draw the ateution of the owner of the property ic it, and to ask that it be attended to at once. The clerk reported that outstanding rates amounted to £Bl, and it was decided to give fourteen days' final notice before taking legal proceedings for their recovery. The chairman drew attention to the number of horses at large in the streets, and it was decided to 'prosecute the owners of same without further notice. ' Accounts amounting to £.17 os lfld were passed for payment. • DOMAIN AND CEMETERY HOARD. 'A meeting of this Board was held on Monday evening, Mr. T. Free in the chair. It was decided to erect a shelter shed in the cemetery, at a cost of £9. Messrs. Free and Harris were asked to ascertain the. cost of iron gates for the Domain, and report at next meeting. HORTICULTURAL. SOCIETY. An executive meeting of the ' above society was held on Monday. Present: Messrs. R. J. Linn (in the chair), C, Preston, Ci. TTadler, S. Johnstone, T. Dee, !?'. Richards, "W. Pollock, Rev. Butler, and the secretary (Mr. F. C. Baines). It was reported' that Mt. D. Stewart would undertake tlie catering in co:>. nection with the show. It was decided to'add a class for whole-bread making to tno cookery section. The secretary reported that a great deal of interest wa-s being t'lhen in the show by intending exhibitors.
