Strenuous efforts were made to defeat the French candidate, who was the favorite. The decision rested with the Spanish vote, which, owing to the German position, suggested Ledochowski as a compromise.
HEAVY RAINS IN QUEENSLAND. Brisbane, February 11. Great rains have fallen in the coastal districts. Two men, Johnstone and Scoull, were drowned when crossing a flooded creek.
THE MISSIXO ENDEAVOR. Hobart, February 15. The Government is sending a steamer for a final search for the missing Endeavor. hhe is bound for the northwest of Tasmania.
X'sTRANDEI) VESSEL. •Brisbane, February 13. The Marsina lies in a good position for salving, and it is expected to refloat her. Tugs are assisting. Passengers and mails have been landed.
A SOLAR ECLIPSE. Sydney, February 15. The solar eclipse was well observed_ Its chief features were a very large sunspot and a group of smaller spots. A distinct view was obtained of the range of lunar mountains.
